Scope and Contents

The Lewis Boyd Photograph Collection contains approximately 86 photographs. Of that number 68 are framed. The photographs are all black and white and are 10 x 8 inches. The collection also includes an issue of the Atlanta Voice that features the photographs of Boyd Lewis.

Biography

Lewis Boyd (1944-2023) was a photojournalist for the Atlanta Voice and the Atlanta Inquirer. During his tenure he captured the election of the first black mayor of Atlanta, Maynard Jackson and his successor Andrew Young. His photographs feature major political figures such as Coretta Scott King, John Calhoun,Ralph David Abernathy, Jesse Jackson, Xernona Clayton, John Lewis, and Hosea Williams. This also includes SCLC leader Joseph Lowery and SNCC’s co-founder Julian Bond. His collection exhibits their activities in the movement as well as shots of historic black neighborhoods in downtown Atlanta, the Old Fourth Ward, Summerhill, Auburn Avenue, and Bedford Pine. Lewis Boyd delved into other forms of media outside of print news. He spent time producing media for WABE and up until 2000 he was a writer for CNNs evening broadcast.
