Types of materials found in this series include family correspondence written from March 1863 until December 1868 between Western H. Moore, a Black soldier stationed in South Carolina and Virginia during the American Civil War, and his family living in Mercer County, Ohio. This series of correspondence offers a unique and rare perspective on the African American experience in the war. The collection also includes a letter from Julius Converse to Hon. Justin S. Morrill regarding the non-payment of bounty to African American soldiers from Vermont assigned to the 54th Massachusetts Regiment.
