Types of materials found in this series include family correspondence written from March 1863 until December 1868 between Western H. Moore, a black soldier who was stationed in South Carolina and Virginia during the American Civil War and his family in living Mercer County, Ohio. The series of correspondence offers a unique and rare perspective on the African American experience in the war. The collection also includes a letter from Julius Converse to Hon. Justin S. Morill with regards to the non-payment of bounty to African-American soldiers from Vermont assigned to the 54th Massachusetts Regiment.
