The Black Cinema Collection contains movie stills (photographic prints and negatives), posters, broadsides and advertisements. The bulk of the Collections consists of movie stills from all-black cast films produced from the mid-1930s through the 1950s. Most of these films were produced by independent white film companies such 'as Associated Features, Hollywood Productions, Jack and Bert Goldberg, Million Dollar Productions, Astor Pictures, and Ted Toddy (Dixie National Pictures, Consolidated Film Exchange, Lucky Star, and Toddy Pictures). A few of the films in the collection were produced by black independent film makers and companies including William Alexander, Eddie Green and Cooper-Randol Productions.

Arrangement note

The finding aid consists of three sections: an alphabetical list by film title, an alphabetical listing of performers, and a box list. The alphabetical list by film title gives not only the film title in the left hand column but also the year of production and/or release, the film company, the :producer and the director if known. In the right hand column is the box number or location and the type of material such as photograph, negative, and/or poster. The alphabetical list of performers gives the names of people or groups that have been identified in the various materials within the collection. Lastly, the box list is an accounting of all of the materials within the various boxes of the collection. The boxes are organized according to the format of the materials, and the materials within each box are filed alphabetically. Photographs and broadsides are in Box 1. Boxes 2 and 3 house negatives. As with all the Archive's Photograph Collections, negatives are not available for viewing. The posters are located in special oversize drawers.
