Abstract:The collection consists of photgraphs taken between 1953 and 1955 of Boyd with important figures in the civil rights movement and the NAACP including Walter White, Horace T. Ward, Thurgood Marshall, Charles L. Harper, Rev. James M. Hinton, and Carl Johnson and in his role as a political commentator at WERD. The collection also contains a reproduction of an article entitled, "People You Should Know" that profiles Boyd.

Biographical/Historical Note

Dr. William Madison Boyd an educator, chairman of the Political Science Department, fellow in the Carnegie Corporation, studied Social Conditions in England, Holland and Sweden, President of the Georgia NAACP, Analyst WERD radio news and international lecturer. As president of the State of Georgia NAACP and as a scholarly political science professor, Dr. William M. Boyd in an article titled " People You Should Know", is described as a man who "displays a brand of courage that is greater than the kiiid that implies a fireman to enter a burning building, or a policeman to approach an armed criminal, or even a war hero to stand up stoutly under fire." His was a brilliant scholastic record, received MA from the University of Michigan and PhD from the same institution, where he was appointed an assistant in the political science department. He received his first collegiate honors from Talladega in history and debating. Later, he was rewarded by Rosenwald, then Carnegie Foundation and this enable him to travel to England, France, Holland, Denmark, Sweden and Poland. A man talented and who has excelled in many other fields, decided to enter into teaching at Talladega High School, then at Fort Valley and in Atlanta where he was a full professor. Dr. William M. Boyd is a southern gentleman, married to a public school teacher, and the father of two sons.
