Abstract:The papers span from 1927 to 1998 with the bulk from 1980 to 1998 and consist of correspondence, printed material, financial and legal documents of the West End Neighborhood Development, Inc. from 1976 to 1998 as well as articles, clippings, correspondence, and research collected by Sikes related to African Americans in the South, various neighborhoods in Atlanta including Summerhill, Midtown, Sylvan Hills, Bedford Pines, and Vine City, and historic preservation and urban renewal.

Biographical/Historical Note

Janice White Sikes, graduate of Spelman and Atlanta University, senior librarian at Auburn Avenue Research Library, and community activist with a special interest in historic preservation, urban renewal, and African American history and culture.


Scope and Content Note

This collection consist of correspondence, printed material, financial and legal documents about West End Neighborhood Development, Inc., (WEND). WEND was started in 1975 by the Homeowners Association to improve the quality of life in the West End Neighborhood. This collection also includes information on the Mall West End, The Atlanta University Center/West Side Pedestrian Corridor system (1993-94), the West End Community, 1985,1988, WEND Education Committee correspondence on Adopt-a-School (1984), WEND Election material, and the West End Festivals ( 1980, 1982, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1994, 1997). The chronological history of the West End (1830-1924). This collection represents an interest in the renewal of urban life in southern cities and rural areas through the preservation movement. Assorted documents on and about Atlanta neighborhoods, such as Summerhill, Midtown, Sylvan Hills, Bedford Pines, and Vine City are included.
