The Portia Allen Hunt Family Papers includes obituaries for Mrs. Portia Allen Hunt; Sergeant Roosevelt Hunt, Jr; Mrs. Mabel Allen; Mrs. Lelia Scott Allen; Ms. Odessa Allen Wyatt; Mr. Luther Allen; Mrs. Ina Hunt, and Mr. William H. Hunt.

Also included in the collection are photographs; newspaper clipping announcing the death of Mrs. Portia Allen Hunt; certificates awarded to Mrs. Hunt; letters of correspondence to Mrs. Hunt from Fulton County Health Department; Veterans Administration Hospital; City of Atlanta Department of Fire; Veterans Administration Regional Office; and photographs of Mrs. Hunt and other members of the Hunt and Allen Family.

Historical Sketch

Mrs. Portia Allen Hunt was born November 16, 1922 to Mr. Gaines and Leila Allen in McDonough, Georgia. At an early age she joined the Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in McDonough, Georgia. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta, Georgia, where she met and married Sergeant Roosevelt Hunt, Sr.

Mrs. Hunt attended the Henry County Training School in McDonough, Georgia, and Carver Vocational School in Atlanta, Georgia, where she received training as a licensed practical nurse. She mastered her nursing skills at Grady Memorial Hospital. Afterwards, she was employed with the Visiting Nursing Association, where she was also a licensed member.

Under the leadership of The Reverend E. L. White, Mrs. Hunt joined the Fortress Avenue Baptist Church. With her experience in nursing, she helped to open and operate a licensed nursery at the church. She continued to serve faithfully under the leadership of The Reverend T. P. Perkins. She also taught elementary school in Henry County.

Prior to her nursing experience, Mrs. Portia Allen Hunt was employed and resided in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was also an employee of the Nursing Department at the Boston City Hospital. She died on August 15, 1992, leaving behind six (6) children: Mr. Roosevelt Hunt, Jr, Mr. Michael Hunt, Mr. Ulysses Hunt, Dr. Gregory Hunt, Ms. Beverly Hunt Barner, and Mrs. Donna Hunt Dawkins; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives, including three sisters: Mrs. Ruby Allen Grier, of Atlanta, Mrs. Frankie Allen Logan, and Ms. Sinclair Allen Paul, both of Boston, Massachusetts.
