Abstract:The collection consists of the records of the Atlanta Chapter of The Links, Inc., from 1953-1991. Series 1 contains materials relating to the National Association and includes charters, organizational manuals, programs, conference proceedings, newsletters and journals, membership directories, photographs, and invitations. Series 2 contains material pertaining to the Southern Area organization. Series 3 contains documents relating to the Atlanta Chapter and includes correspondence, minutes and agendas, budgets, reports, printed material, scrapbooks, and ephemera.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Links, Inc. is a public service, international organization of African-American women that was founded by 2 women in November, 1946 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is a volunteer organization that is committed to promoting educational, cultural, and civic activities among its membership. It also seeks to provide opportunities for the enrichment of personal friendships. Each chapter initiates, supports and participates in programs designed to address the needs of their communities in the areas of services to youth, the arts, national trends and services, and international trends and services.

The Atlanta Chapter of The Links, Inc. was chartered in February, 1953 with 19 members. The original objectives of this chapter were to help women better understand their civic responsibilities, locally and nationally; to encourage cultural appreciation through the arts; and to help women better understand and assume their social responsibilities, locally and nationally. There are several committees of the Chapter which plan programs and raise funds for many educational institutions and charitable programs in the Atlanta area.

In addition to the Atlanta Chapter, there are 3 other chapters in the Atlanta Metro Area - Peachtree Suburban (formerly East Cobb); Dogwood City; and Magnolia chapters.


Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of correspondence; minutes of meetings; committee reports; programs; financial and legal records of the Atlanta Chapter of The Links, Inc.. The bulk of this information is from 1988-1991. Two scrapbooks of activities of the Atlanta Chapter are included. About half of the collection includes material on the National organization and the Southern Area organization. Organizational manuals; National Conference programs and proceedings; the organization's newsletter and journal; invitations' to Link-sponsored events throughout the world; membership directories; copies of the Link song and pledge; and photographs of events are all part of the collection.
