Historical Sketch

Meharry Medical College is located in Nashville, Tennessee. It was founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College. It was a "National Resource" for its role in educating minority health professionals for the Africa American community.

Meharry Medical College has trained one-third of the African American physicians and dentists practicing in the United States today.

Meharry graduates comprise of 40 percent of the African-American faculty at U. S. medical schools, and about 25 percent at dental schools. Currently Meharry operates the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Graduate Studies, and Allied Health. The institution emphasizes the provision of primary care in medically underserved areas, and biomedical research in areas of concern, to underserved populations.

The collection, containing letters, newspaper clippings, a poster, photographs, certificates, and forms dated between 1903 and 1989, documents Clemons' professional life as a pharmacist in Tennessee and Florida as well as the faculty and students of Meharry Medical College, a medical school for African Americans, circa 1903.
