About the Project

The Auburn Avenue Research Library Finding Aids describe the contents and historical context of the archives and manuscript collections held by the Auburn Avenue Research Library on African American Culture and History. An electronic inventory represents each collection listed in the database. The inventories provide general information about the materials in a collection, a historical or biographical sketch providing pertinent background, administrative information, and a container listing that details more precisely the contents of the boxes and folders within the collection. These electronic descriptions are derived primarily from the print finding aids created by the Archives Division of the Auburn Avenue Research Library.

The Finding Aids are encoded using the 2002 version of the Encoded Archival Description (EAD) Document Type Definition, a standard that is endorsed and maintained by the Library of Congress and the Society of American Archivists. The AARL Finding Aids also adhere to the Research Library Groups “RLG Recommended Application Guidelines for EAD.”

ByteManagers, a digitization vendor, completed the digital conversion and encoding according to specifications provided by the Digital Library of Georgia. Personnel from the Digital Library of Georgia and GALILEO completed remaining aspects of the project in cooperation with the Auburn Avenue Research Library. These tasks included research, data preparation, quality control, interface and database design, and, subsequently, providing public access to the Finding Aids via the Internet.

The Auburn Avenue Research Library Finding Aids database is a project of the Digital Library of Georgia in association with the Auburn Avenue Research Library, a special library of the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System. The project is part of Georgia HomePLACE and is supported with federal LSTA funds administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the Georgia Public Library Service, a unit of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
